My name is Lynnaire MacDonald, and I am the Founder and Head Publicist at Film Sprites PR.
I have had a lifelong passion for film which started from an early age and has continued ever since. In addition to this passion for film, communications was in my blood- whether it was submitting manuscripts to publishers at the age of 11 or freelancing for the Christchurch Press’ (now defunct) YOUth page at 17, I had “the gift of the gab” early on.
But it was the Christchurch Earthquake of 2011 which would put me on the path to being a film publicist. It was in the aftermath of the earthquake when, in a small seaside cinema, I was so inspired and energized by a film that I knew I had to pursue my dream of being a film publicist. As a filmmaker you will know the power that film has to inspire, engage and delight– I wanted to devote myself to assisting independent filmmakers just like you with publicity and social media for their films.
Amazingly, it would be a single Tweet on Twitter in 2014 that created Film Sprites PR– yes, really! After gaining a Certificate in Public Relations and Business Communication on top of my Bachelor of Arts in History (minors in Media + Communications and Sociology), I began networking with independent filmmakers around the world. Thus, in April of 2014 I Tweeted to ask if there were filmmakers requiring publicity or social media marketing. By the end of the day I had 3 clients, by the end of that weekend I had 6, and by the end of the month I had 12. The digital age has allowed me to work on film campaigns in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and right here in New Zealand.
Since then, Film Sprites PR has worked with filmmakers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to provide publicity, social media marketing strategy and implementation, brand consultancy and crowdfunding campaign strategy and assistance. Film Sprites PR has worked with many filmmakers, including providing post-release publicity and social media marketing assistance for Night of the Templar, starring Paul Sampson, Norman Reedus, and David Carradine; as well as assisting with the Kickstarter campaign for Us Among the Stones, the second film from D.R. Hood. Hood’s first film, Wreckers, starred Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Foy and Shaun Evans.
As well as weaving words and connecting media and audiences to filmmakers, I also work part-time at Boosted at The Arts Foundation NZ. Boosted is an e-commerce venture owned and operated by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand which is a charitable trust. Boosted is governed by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand AND is one of the few crowdfunding ventures globally wholly dedicated and exclusive to arts and creative projects.
I am also a member of PRINZ and WIFTNZ, completed the PRISM: Public Relations Career Planning & Skills Course and also completed a Producer’s Foundation Course via Raindance LA.
